Governing Body

Being a governor at Grange CE Primary School

Governors are people who have a keen interest in the school and want to help in providing the best education for the children attending the school.  They represent a range of people in the community: staff, parents, church (in a CE school) and the community.  They are willing to attend full governing body meetings, committee meetings and supporting staff and children in the many activities the school undertakes.

At Grange CE Primary School we hold full governors’ meetings each half term.  We have three committees: Leadership, Management and Finance (LMF), Teaching & Learning (T&L) and Community, Environment and Wellbeing (CEW).  Everyone serves on a committee and tries to attend full governors’ meetings.  A committee meeting is held each term.

Governor training is offered by the LA, the Diocese and other partner organisations. Governors are encouraged to attend training.  There are also links with the local authority, the Diocese and other schools.

What do governors do?

Governors offer strategic guidance, rather than getting involved in the operational aspects of a school. This involves:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Overseeing the school’s financial performance, ensuring money is well-spent.
  • Holding the headteacher or school leadership to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff

A governor’s relationship with the school’s leadership team involves challenging existing processes to drive school improvement. Although becoming a governor requires drive and commitment, you’ll enjoy many professional and personal rewards, including career development opportunities and the chance to support young people’s futures.
